A selection of current work is available to buy in the Jen Smith Ceramics Shop
My current pottery is made in response to the textures of peeling paint in Glasgow tenements and closes. The layers of colour revealed by small fragments or ragged flakes demonstrate the changing of the city and the cycles of human activity in a simple and visually interesting way.
I was previously making work influenced by my background in the coastal towns of East Yorkshire but felt that it wasn’t reflective of where I make my work now and my day to day experiences living in Glasgow so I began to research new approaches. I also wanted to include illustrations of the ferns and resilient plants that grow though the walls and pavements, bringing a small piece of that countryside with them.
